About CIMFR

The Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), Dhanbad, is a premier research institute under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Established in 1955, the institute has been at the forefront of research and development in the fields of mining, fuel, and environmental science.

Our mission is to provide scientific and technological support to the mining and fuel sectors, ensuring safety, productivity, and environmental sustainability. Technologies & Innovations

A wireless sensor network for continuous monitoring of strata movement, gas concentration, temperature, and other critical parameters in underground coal mines. This system provides early warning of potential disasters and has been deployed in over 50 mines across India.

A patented process for converting high-ash Indian coal to methanol, a valuable chemical feedstock and clean fuel. The pilot plant at CIMFR demonstrates the commercial viability of this indigenous technology, reducing import dependence.

Development of microbial consortia and plantation techniques for rapid restoration of degraded mine lands. This eco-friendly approach improves soil fertility and promotes biodiversity in post-mining areas.
